My work is both functional and completely impractical, combining simplicity and clean lines with unique shapes. I especially love working with porcelain ... its white translucence, smooth and glassy texture, how it amps up the glaze colors. Forms and shapes found in nature are my primary inspiration. I’ll notice some random thing on a walk and try to capture that in clay.
Each piece is unique with its own flaws and qualities. A lot of my work is functional art ... cups, bowls, plates and vases ... with carved designs, layered colors and cold finishes. The clay I use is perfect for hand-carving and polishing.
In striving for more ecological sustainability, I reclaim my clay scraps and use low-fire glazes and alternative firing techniques.
